I have been wanting a grinder/mill to grind grains especially rye grains. This was my chance to try it.Right off the bat, I am going to share why I am giving it 4 stars.I have a Vitamix blender. I have used this in the past to grind grains but I wanted something specially designed for grains and such. I thought it would work better? With the Vitamix blender, I can grind my rye grain in about half the time with the same result if not slightly better.Using this grinder:Opening the box, there are three blades at the very top. I thought this meant it either used all three blades or assembly required.Looking into the mill cup, there is already one installed. It does not look like it comes out easily. I assume the three blades are to replace one another as they wear out. The blades are strong. Not as heavy duty as my Vitamix but strong enough. More like my coffee grinder.Trying it out:I read the directions. To the left is a pulse feature. To the right there is speed one and speed two.An important note I found in the instructions: Do not grind for more than 90 seconds at a time. Let cool it cool for 2 minutes in between the 90 second intervals. It says do not overfill past the markings in the mill cup except I don’t see any markings. Just the indentations from the design of the cup. I assume this is what the instructions mean. The grains or whatever is being grinded need to cover the blade.I decided knowing these two things, I would do 1 cup of rye.I pulsed it for a few seconds. I looked in. It needed more grinding. I pulsed it again. Checked it. Needed more. I put it on speed 2. Checked it. Still needed more grinding. It didn’t take a full 90 seconds but it was almost a minute of grinding. This isn’t terribly long but longer than I thought it would take. The flour was acceptable but could probably use a little more grinding still the same.In comparison, I added a cup to my Vitamix. Within 30 seconds, I had rye flour. I blended it a few more seconds to make sure it was as fine as I wanted it.Price: Price is relative to the person. I thought I was getting something a little better with it priced at $70 but then a food mill can cost upwards to over $200. Knowing what I know now, I would use my Vitamix and be happy with it. If I didn’t own the blender I have, this does the job. It has a bigger cup than my coffee grinder. What I like is that I can use this just for grains. Whereas my blender is used for a variety of things and sometimes used daily. I have to consciously plan out when I am grinding with my blender so that it is dry.4 stars:I am concerned of how long it will last knowing that I can only use it in 90 second intervals. I wish it was around $50 and not $70. It is a generic food mill but does the job.
